Jay’s Brewing Malt Spotlight – Red Wheat Malt

August 14, 2017

2017, General posting, Malt Spotlight

Red Wheat Malt – Produced from quality hard, spring red wheat. Using this malt produces a fuller-bodied beer that is creamy and sweet, with a malty flavor and a hint of fruitiness. Considered a base malt, with a utilization recommendation ≤50%. Proper use of this malt aids in the formation and retention of a creamy smooth head found on many styles of your favorite beers. When compared to it’s sister malt (White Wheat), Red wheat has a maltier flavor and is slightly darker in color. (Xlovibon vs y lovibond). However, depending on the application, it is commonly acceptable to substitute one for the other in recipe formation. Wheat malt is suitable for for many new and old ales and lagers. Some of which include the controversial New England IPA, Weissbier(10A),Weizenbock(10C), and the American wheat(1D).

This and 58 other malts are available year round at Jay’s Brewing in Manassas, VA.
